Boyan joined Delasport in early 2021 as a Junior QA. Like many people at the beginning of their careers, his first few months brought a constant stream of new information, challenges, and questions. Looking back, however, he sees one factor as more important to his development than any particular technology or process: the people he had the opportunity to learn from. 

From day one, he found himself surrounded by QA colleagues who were always willing to help, share their knowledge, and make time for his questions. Their support helped him quickly find his footing and build the confidence he needed to take the next steps in his professional development. 

The beginning is always the hardest 

When Boyan started as a Junior QA, he thought about quality mainly in terms of test scenarios, identified defects, and successful releases. With experience, he began to see that these were only part of a much bigger picture. 

Behind every issue, there is usually an underlying cause. Sometimes it is technical, but often it comes down to communication, unclear requirements, different expectations, or insufficient coordination between teams. 

This became one of the most valuable lessons of Boyan’s early career. The role of a QA professional isn’t simply to find defects. It is about understanding why they happen and finding ways to prevent them before they ever reach the end user. 

As he gained experience, Boyan began taking on more complex tasks and contributing to initiatives beyond standard testing. This broader involvement helped him realize that making a meaningful contribution to quality requires more than understanding the product itself. It also means understanding the business behind it, the processes that support it, and the needs of the client. 

 The Next Step: Client Services 

One of the most important milestones in Boyan’s development was his move into the Client Services department. This is where every new project and partnership begins to take shape. Each client brings specific requirements, different goals, and unique challenges, making the work highly dynamic and demanding much more than technical expertise alone. 

Until then, Boyan’s main focus had been on validating functionality and ensuring the quality of existing solutions. Moving into Client Services challenged him to look at projects from a much broader perspective. 

Knowing how to test was no longer enough. He needed to understand the entire product development process, anticipate potential risks, and find the right balance between client needs, regulatory requirements, technical constraints, and end-user expectations. 

In an industry like Delasport’s, quality and compliance go hand in hand. A project can be technically flawless, but if it fails to meet regulatory requirements or the client’s specific needs, technical excellence alone will not make it successful. 

This experience gave Boyan a deeper appreciation for cross-team communication, strong organization, and clear ownership. The more complex a project becomes, the more important it is for everyone involved to work from the same information and toward the same goal. 

Quality Starts Long Before Testing 

Years of working across different projects have shaped one of Boyan’s strongest beliefs about QA: quality doesn’t begin with the QA team, and it doesn’t end when all the tests have passed. 

True quality starts much earlier - with clearly defined requirements, thoughtful project planning, and effective day-to-day communication between everyone involved. 

The better internal processes are organized, the less room there is for errors later on. For Boyan, this is why improving processes and improving quality have always gone hand in hand. 

Over the years, he and his colleagues have invested significant effort in optimizing working practices, improving communication between teams, and creating clearer ways to track different initiatives. Even small improvements can make a meaningful difference, helping teams move faster, avoid misunderstandings, and ultimately deliver a better product. 

How AI Has Changed the Way of Working 

In recent years, Boyan has also witnessed another major transformation across the industry: the growing role of artificial intelligence in everyday work. 

What initially seemed new and difficult to apply in a real working environment has quickly become a natural part of the day-to-day work of many technology teams. 

At Delasport, AI has become a valuable assistant across a wide range of activities. Tasks that once required significant time can now be completed much faster. Analyzing information, structuring documentation, preparing test scenarios, conducting initial research, and handling repetitive tasks can all be accelerated with a few well-crafted prompts. 

For Boyan and his team, this means spending less time on routine work and focusing more of their energy on activities that require human judgment, expertise, and strategic thinking. At the same time, he is clear about where the role of AI ends. It doesn’t replace experience or critical thinking. It is a tool that can increase efficiency, while the final decisions - and the responsibility behind them remain firmly in human hands. 

The Biggest Challenge: Becoming a Team Lead 

Of all the professional challenges Boyan has faced, the transition to QA Team Lead proved to be the most demanding. It wasn’t simply about taking on additional responsibilities or making more decisions. The biggest change was in his mindset. 

As an individual contributor, the outcome is largely in your own hands. You know what you have done, what you have checked, and what you are responsible for. Leading a team changes that dynamic completely. Success no longer depends on one person. Results are built through the combined efforts of everyone around you. 

For Boyan, this was when trust became one of the most important aspects of leadership. He still remembers the moment when his own manager placed their trust in him and gave him the opportunity to take on greater responsibility. That opportunity helped him recognize that he was ready for the next step in his development. 

Today, he tries to offer the people on his team that same trust. His own experience taught him how powerful it can be when someone believes in your potential - sometimes even before you fully recognize it yourself. 

Leading by Example 

Over time, Boyan has come to see leadership very differently from simply being the person with all the answers. 

For him, a good leader should be comfortable saying, “I was wrong,” “I’m sorry,” or “I don’t know.” Rather than seeing these words as signs of weakness, he considers them signs of maturity, confidence, and a willingness to grow. That philosophy also shapes the way he leads his team. Boyan believes that if leaders expect people to be open, honest, and accountable, they need to demonstrate those qualities themselves first. 

Consistency matters just as much. Success rarely happens overnight. More often, it is the result of daily effort accumulated over time - day after day, year after year. 

The Team Is What Makes the Impossible Possible 

Perhaps one of the most valuable lessons Boyan has learned throughout his career is that no one succeeds alone. Behind every successful project is a team of people who trust one another and know they can rely on each other. 

For Boyan, that trust is one of the greatest strengths of any high-performing team. It takes time to build, but once established, it gives people the confidence to take ownership, make bold decisions, and approach their work with greater confidence. The true value of that trust becomes especially clear when a team faces challenges. Those are the moments that reveal just how important the people around you are - and how success is rarely an individual achievement, but the result of a shared effort. 

Knowing they can rely on one another is what helps Boyan and his colleagues continue to push themselves every day - to become better professionals, better colleagues, better parents, and, above all, better people. 

Hobbies That Teach Consistency 

Outside of work, Boyan has two hobbies that might seem very different at first: beekeeping and running. Interestingly, both have taught him many of the same principles. 

Beekeeping has shown him the importance of organization, patience, and collective effort. Running, meanwhile, is a constant reminder that progress comes through consistency and discipline. Both help him maintain a balance between professional challenges and life outside of work. They also reinforce a principle that applies equally well to his career: meaningful results rarely come from one big action. They are built through many small, consistent steps. 

The Most Important Lesson 

Looking back on Boyan’s journey from Junior QA, through Client Services, to QA Team Lead, one lesson stands above the rest: people make the difference. 

Technology will continue to evolve. Artificial intelligence will keep changing the way teams work. Processes will become increasingly efficient. But trust, teamwork, curiosity, and consistency will remain at the heart of every successful team. 

These are the qualities that have shaped Boyan’s journey at Delasport and continue to influence the way he approaches both his work and leadership today. They are also a reminder that when people work together, trust one another, and share a common goal, they can achieve far more than they ever could alone.

Across  markets the following was measured: Engagement that goes far beyond a single bet: 68% of players bet on more than one fixture, 45% place multiple bets during the same game, and players average 5.7 bets per game with an average wager of €17. Combined with strong margins of 16.6% on corners and 8.3% on goals, the results show how Betiator turns live sports engagement into sustained betting activity and real value for operators. 

Player activity is also distributed across different match events. Approximately 80% of Betiator players engage with Goals, while 60% engage with Corners, demonstrating that engagement is not confined to a single betting mechanic. 

Major Tournaments Amplify Betiator Engagement 

Betiator’s performance during the World Cup provided an even stronger indication of its potential during periods of heightened sporting interest. 

During the tournament,  the average bet increased with approximately 200% – while turnover per player was approximately 240% higher.   

Player behaviour also shifted during the competition. Corners emerged as an especially popular market, with 77% of players engaging with Corners during the World Cup, compared with approximately 60% across the wider period. 

The figures highlight Betiator’s potential during major sporting events, when operators are competing most intensely for player attention, engagement and share of wallet. The iGaming industry talks a lot about technology being flexible, modular and scalable. But the real test comes after the first integration is complete: how quickly can you launch the next brand? 

Through the partnership between Betable and Delasport, eight brands are already live in the UK. And once the core integration was established, an additional brand was brought to market in less than one month. 

Eight brands are already live through the Betable-Delasport integration. What does that tell you? 

Reece: The real proof of scalability comes after the first launch. 

Connecting two platforms once is important, but the bigger question is whether that same foundation can support the next brand without starting again from scratch. 

That is what we have achieved with Betable. The core integration between its wider platform and Delasport’s sportsbook is already in place and proven. When a new brand is ready to launch, we can focus on what makes that proposition unique rather than rebuilding the technology underneath it. 

Eight live brands show that this is no longer just an integration. It is a repeatable launch model. 

One additional brand in the UK went live in less than two weeks. What made that possible? 

Reece: We were not starting from a blank page. 

The core connections between Betable’s platform and our sportsbook had already been built, tested and proven in a live environment. That includes critical areas such as the account, wallet and wider player journey. 

So instead of spending time rebuilding those foundations, the teams could focus on the new brand itself - its configuration, content, branding, testing and operational readiness.

Does moving faster mean every brand ends up with the same sportsbook? 

Reece: Not at all.

Once those systems are successfully connected, there is no reason to treat every additional brand as a completely new integration project. 

The framework already exists. From there, the focus moves to configuration, testing, and the requirements of the individual brand. 

How do you maintain quality when the launch window is so short? 

Reece: Speed should come from removing repetition, not removing controls. 

The core integration has already been tested through previous launches and live operation, which removes a significant amount of technical uncertainty. 

But every new brand still goes through the right configuration, validation, testing, and readiness processes. 

The quick launches happened because the model was proven, and the teams knew how to execute it efficiently - not because steps were skipped. 

How important was the collaboration between Betable and Delasport? 

Reece: It was critical. 

A repeatable technical model only works if the operating model is just as strong. 

Both teams need clear ownership, fast communication, and a shared understanding of how a brand moves from configuration through testing and into launch. 

When everyone understands their responsibilities and decisions can be made quickly, the entire process becomes much more efficient. 

The technology created the foundation. The way the two teams worked together allowed us to make full use of it. 

Why does this matter commercially for operators? 

Reece: Because market opportunities do not wait for long integration projects. 

Operators may want to launch another brand, enter a new market, or respond quickly to a commercial opportunity. If every move requires another major technical programme, technology becomes a barrier to growth. 

A reusable model changes that. 

It gives operators a faster and more predictable route to market because they are building on a foundation that is already live and proven across multiple brands. 

That is ultimately what scalable technology should do: make growth easier, not more complicated. 

What does this prove beyond speed to market? 

Reece: It proves that scale does not have to mean more complexity. 

Without a common foundation, eight brands could mean eight separate implementations, more technical dependencies, and more maintenance. 

With a reusable model, the portfolio can grow while much of the underlying technology remains consistent. 

That helps with launch speed, but it also makes ongoing support, product development and the rollout of future capabilities more efficient. 

How would you summarise what the Betable integration has achieved?

If you’ve worked with Kafka long enough, you’ve probably seen a broker fail with an OutOfMemoryError. 

The natural assumption is that the broker has exhausted its available memory. The investigation usually starts with familiar questions: 

• Is the JVM heap too small? 

• Is there a memory leak? 

• Has the container reached its memory limit? 

• Is the node under memory pressure? 

Sometimes, however, every one of those questions leads to a dead end. 

This article explores one such scenario—a failure that initially looked like a classic memory issue, but ultimately had nothing to do with available RAM. Instead, the root cause was hidden in the interaction between Kafka’s storage engine and the operating system’s virtual memory management. 

Understanding why requires looking beyond the JVM. 

The Puzzle 

Imagine a Kafka broker that suddenly refuses to start. 

The exception is familiar: 

java.lang.OutOfMemoryError 

The response is equally familiar. 

Check the heap. 

Healthy. 

Check container memory. 

Healthy. 

Check node memory. 

Healthy. 

Increase JVM heap. 

No change. 

Increase Kubernetes memory limits. 

Still no change. 

At this point, the obvious explanations have been exhausted. Yet the broker still reports an OutOfMemoryError. 

So what resource has actually been exhausted? 

Looking Beyond the Heap 

One of Kafka’s greatest strengths is its storage architecture. 

Instead of constantly reading data through traditional I/O operations, Kafka relies heavily on memory-mapped files (mmap). This allows the operating system to efficiently cache and access log data while reducing unnecessary memory copies between user space and kernel space. 

Every Kafka log segment is backed by several files: 

000000000000.log 
000000000000.index 
000000000000.timeindex 

These files are memory mapped by the broker, allowing Kafka to access them efficiently while letting the operating system handle page caching. 

This design is one of the reasons Kafka achieves such high throughput. 

But it also introduces an important dependency that is often overlooked. 

Every memory-mapped file consumes a virtual memory mapping managed by the operating system. 

Unlike JVM heap, these mappings are not limited by Java’s heap size. 

They’re an operating system resource. 

When a Small Configuration Creates a Large Problem 

Now consider the following configuration: 

segment.ms = 10000 

At first glance, nothing appears unusual. 

Kafka simply rotates log segments every ten seconds. 

But let’s follow the consequences. 

A single partition now creates: 

• 6 segments every minute 

• 360 segments every hour 

• 8,640 segments every day 

Every segment generates multiple files. 

Every file may be memory mapped. 

Multiply that across dozens or hundreds of partitions and a typical retention period, and what initially looked like a harmless configuration becomes millions of files that Kafka must manage. 

The JVM still has plenty of heap. 

The container still has available memory. 

The operating system, however, has a rapidly growing number of memory mappings to maintain. 

Eventually, that limit is reached. 

Why More Memory Doesn’t Help 

This is where the error message becomes misleading. 

The exception suggests a memory shortage. 

Naturally, engineers respond by increasing available memory. 

Unfortunately, memory was never the limiting factor. 

The limiting resource was the number of virtual memory mappings available to the Kafka process. 

Once that limit was reached, additional mmap() operations failed. 

From the JVM’s perspective, the failure surfaced as an OutOfMemoryError, even though physical memory remained available. 

The lesson is subtle but important: 

Not every OutOfMemoryError indicates that your application has exhausted RAM. 

Sometimes it indicates that the operating system can no longer provide another resource required to allocate memory. 

Understanding that distinction changes the entire direction of the investigation. 

Understanding the Chain of Events 

The interesting part wasn’t the configuration itself. 

It was understanding how a single Kafka setting propagated all the way down to the operating system. 

The chain looked like this: 

Aggressive segment rotation 
        ↓ 
More log segments 
        ↓ 
More .log and index files 
        ↓ 
More memory-mapped files 
        ↓ 
More virtual memory mappings 
        ↓ 
Operating system limit reached 
        ↓

Once the entire chain became clear, the solution became surprisingly straightforward. 

Correcting the segment rotation policy dramatically reduced the number of log segments. 

No JVM tuning was required. 

No larger Kubernetes nodes. 

No additional broker memory. 

Simply understanding which resource had actually been exhausted. 

Engineering Doesn’t Stop at the Fix 

Fixing the configuration resolved the immediate problem. 

But solving an incident once isn’t enough. 

The more important question became: 

How do we ensure we detect this long before a broker reaches that state again? 

Traditional Kafka dashboards typically focus on metrics such as: 

• JVM memory 

• CPU usage 

• Consumer lag 

• Disk utilization 

• Network throughput 

Those metrics remained perfectly healthy throughout this scenario. 

The underlying resource was invisible. 

To close that observability gap, we introduced additional monitoring focused on the resources that actually mattered. 

Among the metrics we now track are: 

• Log segment count per topic, allowing us to identify abnormal segment growth before it becomes operationally significant. 

• Open file count per Kafka broker container, providing early visibility into resource consumption that isn’t reflected in traditional JVM metrics. 

These metrics complement—not replace—the standard Kafka dashboards. Together they provide a more complete picture of broker health and make this entire class of problems visible long before they affect availability. 

Looking Beyond Kafka 

Although this example involves Kafka, the lesson extends far beyond a single technology. 

Modern distributed systems depend on many operating system resources that rarely appear in standard dashboards. 

Heap memory is only one of them. 

Others include: 

• File descriptors 

• Virtual memory mappings 

• Threads 

• Ephemeral ports 

• Inodes 

• Network connection tracking 

These resources are usually invisible—until they’re exhausted. 

Building reliable platforms means understanding not only how applications behave, but also how they interact with the operating system underneath them. 

Sometimes the most valuable debugging tool isn’t adding more resources. 

It’s identifying which resource is actually running out. 

Final Thoughts 

The most interesting production problems are rarely solved by increasing limits or allocating larger machines. 

They’re solved by understanding how systems work beneath the abstraction layers we interact with every day. 

Kafka’s use of memory-mapped files is an elegant optimization that enables exceptional performance. But like every optimization, it introduces operational characteristics that engineers should understand when running Kafka in production.
